Chapter 14

I'm watching Lilly and Abby brush down Kit Kat and can't pull my eyes away. Lilly fits in so well here, and Abby jumped right in, even though she arrived yesterday.

I finally tear my eyes away, when Blaze walks up beside me, nodding towards the office.

"So, you and Lilly?" He asks once the door closes behind me.

"Yeah, she's it for me, and I feel it in my gut. She's my Riley," I tell him.

His whole face softens. "Does she know that?"

"I told her I'm serious about us, and that I wasn't going anywhere. I just don't want to scare her off with how deep that runs."

"What about her job? She's always on the road," Blaze asks.

"Her job isn't an issue for me. She seems to love it, and if it's what makes her happy, how can I get in the way of that. Do I love the idea of her being gone so much? No, but can you blame me? But I do know, I’ll find a way to make it work."

Blaze is silent, before he asks, "So, what now?"

"Now, it's time to convince her how I feel, so there’s no doubt in her head when she gets back on the road."

"If you want this bad enough, you’ll be able to do it."

He pats me on the shoulder and heads out of the office. I decide to get some ordering and paperwork done before I go look for Lilly.

This time I find her cleaning out her rig and putting all her stuff in boxes.

"What’re you doing?" I ask her.

"Oh, hey, Mike. Just the person I was hoping to see. I need a favor," she smiles at me. I wonder if she knows she could get me to do anything she wants with that smile.

"What’s up?" I ask.

"Well, I have to take my rig up to Amarillo to the main shop. I decided to stick around through Christmas, so they want to do some work on it over the break. I was hoping you'd follow me up, so I have a ride back. If we leave early, we can do it in a day."

A whole day with her? There’s no way I'm turning that down. I'll find a way to make it work. In my mind, I'm already rearranging things and planning who to ask to pick up a few chores.

"Of course. When do you need to get it up there?"

"Day after tomorrow."

"Done."

She leans in and kisses my cheek. "Thank you, Mike."

I watch her head back into her rig and finish pulling stuff out. I'm already working out what I need to do to make it happen, and also, trying to see if I can squeeze in a proper date on the way.
